Sunset Poem

Sunset Poem

Make a poem or short story into a piece of art! You'll discover that the bright orange colors seem to jump out of your page of blue. That's the magic of complementary colors!

Write your own story or poem about something that is blue and orange. Then, draw a picture to go with your words. Your story could be about the orange and blue colors in nature. Our sample is about the sun setting on the ocean. Or, write about the Autumn. Remember what it's like to see the orange leaves against the bright blue sky?

If you'd like to print out these instructions, go to your File menu and select Print.

What You'll Need:

Orange crayons or color markers
Bright blue paper for printer & plain white paper
Scissors
Glue stick
Computer paint program, such as Kid Pix
(or pattern from this page)
Printer with black ink

What To Do:

  • At your computer, open a painting program such as Kid Pix, ClarisWorks/Paint, or Windows Paint. Draw the outline of the sun setting over the ocean. Type your poem or story in the water. Put one sheet of bright blue paper into your printer and one sheet of white paper. Print 2 copies.

    Another Option:
    - Print from the pattern that is provided. Add your own poem to the art. Click here to see the pattern.

  • Use orange crayons or markers to color the sunset. Try many types of orange, such as orange-red and burnt-orange. Cut out this half of the printed piece. Glue it on top of the blue printed art so that it covers up the line art of the sun.
