Community Meeting at the LaMott Community Center.

  • Block Captains - to make sure that their blocks know about the meetings
  • discussion of "Commissioner's" meeting to be held on Tuesday, March 27, 2001

Who: Omni Point

What: want to place an antenna and tower

 Where: at the LaMott Firehouse

When: they have 60 days from the November 16th, 1998

Why: to cover a gaping coverage area for their cellular phone service

It should be noted (and it came up at the meeting) that Omnipoint is suing the township because they couldn't place a similar tower on a water tower located near Broad and Cheltenham Avenues. At the time of this writing, that suit is still pending.

I attended the meeting and here's what happened:

Omni Point representatives (including their legal counsel) were on hand to explain their plans for placing the tower and antenna at the firehouse. Then came the time for the residents to express their concerns.

The space that Omni Point will use will be leased to them by the firehouse which in turn would financially benefit the all-volunteer fire company which is badly in need of funds.

Those opposed: 95%

  • don't want the tower to be in a residential area

  • commercial areas were suggested as an alternative
  • concern over the affect of those that have pacemakers and the like. (It was explained that the antenna itself would not cause the problem but that the cellular phones themselves (waves) might cause a problem
  • Those not opposed: 5%

  • felt that the financial benefit for the fire station warranted such action (meaning having the tower and antenna placed at the fire house

Enough Said!

Despite a February 17th (1999) ruling, residents of LaMott will continue their opposition.  OmniPoint has made plans to start building on the water tower (Philadelphia Suburban Water Co. owns the water tower) .  The exact date that the building will be completed (or even started) is unknown.
