Notes from our thread on Tardive Dyskinesia http://www.ninds.nih.gov/health_and_medical/disorders/tardive_doc.htm I have been doing a lot of research on Meds - they have always scared me. It might be because I see the worst in my job. People who now have permanent tardive dyskinesia from the medications. Glad to hear that Nora is getting checked out. We are hearing about movement disorders - one young woman started with a shuffle and now can't get off the couch or eat or anything. Is it the high level of meds that caused it? Nobody seems to know. OK....hate to be behind here...can you tell me what this is and how it happens? Renee http://www.ninds.nih.gov/health_and_medical/disorders/tardive_doc.htm Yeah, I first heard about it reading through de-institutionalization literature. At that time everyone was really upset about people being "chemically restrained" with Haladol. However, now I am hearing about it a lot more about younger kids. Kids who have been managed with meds for a long time with "cocktails" then they end up with movement disorders as young adults. I was reviewing the list of people with medications that have to go through the Human Rights Committee at the CCBs - it is a lot of people - it is a lot of medications! And that is only the people on Comp Services - SLS doesn't have to go through HRC. There may be a hidden problem here - of course there may not be a problem - just something I keep wondering about. (another one of those ever present issues that I can't seem to get resolved!) There are also other classes of drugs, like regelan (a GI motility drug) that also cause TD. Denver, Thank you very much. I had not heard about this before in spite of the fact that we have over 100 families in our XXYY group and many of them are using these drugs.
