Review of The Secret Laughter of Women
Proceedings would be unbearable if it weren’t for Firth, whose witty, charismatic performance is a welcome respite from everyone else. The scenes between him and Roberts in particular provide some much-needed light, entertaining banter.

"Long, minus the American accent, is pleasant enough in the lead but son Roberts steals the show with an energetic and fun-loving performance that perfectly compliments Firth's turn as the engaging outsider with a lust for life." -- from Film Selector

Nia Long in This is London: "And I had to master the English accent of a Nigerian woman, which was daunting. I was scared of the emotional moments in case I didn't sound right. But Colin Firth was wonderful to work alongside, like a typical Englishman, he tells some very good stories."

"Similar to The Wedding Banquet and The Joy Luck Club, The Secret Laughter of Women is essentially a story about an African community where the women are central." ... "In Nene’s [Nia Long] household the Nigerian culture is without a doubt the dominant one. In one scene when Matthew [played by Colin Firth] uses his left hand to take food during Sammy birthday party, his lack of knowledge of African etiquette makes him appear alien and you can almost feel his discomfort."    Source: 6° Degrees, the UK Independent Film Website [Also the source of the photo to the left - Click to see an enlargement]
