The Liturgies in Lent

by The Rev. Thomas L. Weitzel
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

.

The liturgies listed below incorporate several elements to emphasize the focus of the season: 1. A special Lenten Confession for each Sunday (with or without communion); 2. Use of LBW Setting 3 for its more somber plainsong type sound (the parts used reflect only those parts taken from SBH setting 2); 3. Use of the five parts of Martin Luther's Small Catechism as the profession of faith replacing the creed each week; 4. A special offertory hymn #408 stanza 1, "God, Whose Giving Knows No Ending" (a lovely stewardship hymn with cross and shattered grave themes, not generally known, but quickly learned during this full season); 5. The singing of the setting 3 Lord's Prayer (also good to learn for use at other times of the year); and 6. The ancient Prayer of Humble Access as an invitation to communion at the breaking of the bread. Together, these make for a fine liturgy befitting this season of reflection and repentance.

Make sure you also check out the Handbook for the Discipline for Lent and the Stations of the Cross (traditionally done on Fridays, but might be used before/after weekday Lenten services). Both can enhance the season greatly.
