Corse
& Staunton has been in existence since 1994. The first Chairman
was Jim Pratt, the man whose idea initially formed the club.
Two
bowls mats were hired from Newent Sports Centre at a cost of £10.00
per week. In 1995 the club received a £1.000 grant for equipment
from the "Foundation for Sports and Art". This was a great
boost and enabled the club to purchase two mats at cost price.
It
was a soon agreed that due to the number of members attending a third
mat should be bought. Second hand bowls were purchased for members to
use. The club was running well and had played 17 friendly matches in
the first 2 years, but only 2 were won.
By
1996 the club boasted a membership of 47. Two sessions were played each
week, both on Tuesday. In the afternoon, the older members of the community
would meet and play bowls. In the evenings, the keener members would
meet for their two & half hour session.
Underlay
for the bowls mats were the next purchase. This enabled more bowls to
be kept on the mat - a very popular decision. 20 friendly games were
played throughout the third year - most were lost. 9 teams from the
club entered the County Championships which doubled as the Nationals
Qualifiers. The members had no idea what they were doing, apart from
bowling.
Stewart
Minchew was runner up in the Singles Competition and the following week,
Gill Johnson, Barbara Bubb, David Bubb and Stewart Minchew won the fours.
In the County league 14 games were played, 8 games were won and the
team ended up 5th out of 8. Three members of the club represented Hereford
& Gloucestershire. At the start of the winter, a second league team
was formed.
By
1997, some members had regular visits to the Nationals. One team consisting
of Gill Johnson, Pauline Barley, Des Barley and Stewart Minchew scored
a maximum 8 shots and played in the last 16. Gill & Stewart entered
the England trials for the first time. This year, the club won its first
major Competitions: -
- The
Quedgeley Triples - Willow Trust Trophy.
- The
Macmillan Charity Competition.
- The
Southern Winter League 1st place Trophy.
Unfortunately,
the second team did not manage to win a match in their first league year.
The
next year our 1st league team won the First Division Trophy again. The
club was improving year by year, so much so, that all available trophies
within the two Counties were won within a 2 year period.
Gloucestershire
& Herefordshire have played as independent Counties for the past four
years. Club members have been on the winning side for the Gloucestershire
County singles cup three times, the pairs cup once, the triples twice,
the fours cup once the mixed fours three times.
At
present, the club practices on Tuesday afternoons, (this is still for
the more mature members) Tuesday evenings & Thursday evenings. The
club arranges a singles, a pairs a triples and a fours competition during
the year, to which all members are invited.
In
2002 Gill Johnson was invited to play in the England Team & was proud
to represent her Club, County at the British Isles Championship in Dumfries.
David Bubb has been the County Secretary since its formation, he is also
the Director of Umpires for the E.S.M.B.A Stewart Minchew has been the
County Captain for the past season.
