Life of an Artist, Video Viewing and Report Requirement
Art History, USCU
Gerard Bowles

spacerYou are required to view a videotape or DVD on the life of an artist. Then write a one page (double-spaced) synopsis of what the film portrayed about the artist and work, concluding with your reaction to the film. Do not copy from an online description, of course. Your paper should be well organized.
spacerYou can choose from the list below, or consult your library. I recommend consulting the Blockbuster online site (http://blockbuster.com/), or a library guide to films/videotapes to read film descriptions. Some may contain material offensive to you; (R) = rated R, not for children; some have nudity, language, drug/alcohol. (-B) = not avail. at Blockbuster, but description is at Blockbuster online. Area video stores (not just Blockbuster) are listed at (http://www.gy.com/biz/532230/864.htm).

Filmmaker's Art (for those interested in a career in visual or written arts): Federico Fellini's films are shown in most filmmaking, and some psychology and history classes at major universities. Warning though, they are rough & wild, and not for "average" American viewers--read Blockbuster's review. I listed just two of many. "Juliet..." is my favorite, but "8 1/2" is considered his best work.
8 1/2 (1963). Dir. Federico Fellini. [a slice of the director's life & work, in his unique style] *
Juliet of the Spirits (1965) [may seem dated, but a must for film students]
Fellini's Satyricon (1969) (R). Dir. Federico Fellini [adapted from Petronius' (d. 66 A.D.) famous "farcical" criticism of ancient Roman life] warning*
Un Gatto Nel Cervello (A Cat in the Brain) (1990). Dir. Lucio Fulci [if you want to be a filmmaker, and liked Fellini's "8 1/2," you will enjoy this]
