FUHU News

01/21/2007 I've fallen shamelessly behind in responding to submissions. I apologize to everyone for this grievous error. To correct this problem and catch up on my backlog, I've decided to close FUHU to any further submissions. Againn, my apologies to all the hard-working and patient writers out there in the cosmos.
08/26/2006 My computer crashed this week and unfortunately the FUHU submission log file was corrupted. This disaster doesn't mean I've lost all submissions to FUHU. What it does mean is that I'll have to rebuild the the tracking file I use to record all FUHU submission activity, which means longer response times. (Even though I keep monthly backups of all FUHU files, the submission file can change daily.) Sorry, folks.
08/02/2006 Full Unit Hookup #8 Summer 2006 is ready for deliver! Watch for it in bookstores, online venues, and strip clubs near you!
09/05/2005 Full Unit Hookup (Conicat Hats Press) presents an evening of readings. Gwenda Bond, Mark Rudolph, Erin Keane, and Christopher Rowe will be reading from their works on Saturday, October 15, 2005 at 6 pm at Destinations Booksellers in New Albany, Indiana. If you're in the Louisville metropolitan area, please come and join us!
09/01/2005 FUHU #7 is ready for shipping. I'll be mailing out subscribers' and contributors' copies by the end of the week. I'm very excited by this issue. I hope my FUHU readers will be pleased with the content.
01/05/2005 FUHU #6 has returned from the printer and I'll be sending out copies to all the subscribers and contributors this weekend. A great way to start the New Year! (even though the issue says Winter 2004).
07/17/2004 Finally FUHU #5 has been printed and mailed to all subscribers and contributors. I've had a rough time getting this issue together. From software gliches to print shop problems (not to mention my own flavor of procrastination) FUHU #5 has been a trial, but now it's done. YAY!
04/02/2004 Issue #5 of FUHU is coming along nicely. The tentative publishing date is May 31, 2004. I still have plenty of room for a few poems, a couple of short stories, and an article. Please keep submitting. And thanks for expressing an interest in FUHU.
11/25/2003 Issue #4 of FUHU has been mailed to all contributors and subscribers.
05/30/2003 The electronic submission form had stopped working! How? When? Why? I don't know. I've disabled the form and request that anyone who has used the form after 5/09/03 to please resubmit. I'm very sorry for the inconvenience.
05/27/2003 FUHU issue #3 has returned from the printer, and I will be mailing out subscriptions and contributors' copies within the week. I've fallen behind on submissions (again) but I hope to get to them soon.
02/14/2003 FUHU issue #3 (Spring 2003) has plenty of space for poetry and non-fiction. And there's still room for one more short story. I had hopes that issue #3 would be ready for the printer by the end of February, but perhaps my hopes were a little too high. Anyone want to prove me wrong?
02/07/2003 I've received plenty of fiction over the last few months but very little poetry and absolutely no nonfiction. Where are the essays, book reviews, and opinion pieces that I so dearly need? As for the submission folder, the oldest piece I have is dated 01/16/2003 so if you submitted anything before that date and you haven't received a response from me, please query.
(I noticed a lack of submissions from 12/07/2002 to 12/29/2002, which is unusual for FUHU. Did I really not receive anything between those dates or did the Internet eat them? The only way I'll know is if someone queries me.)
01/25/2003 I've finally caught up with submissions, which means that I don't have any outstanding manuscripts received before 12/02/02. Although it took me three days to reach my goal, I feel confident I can now maintain a maximum two month response time.
01/21/2003 I've fallen way behind in FUHU submissions. In fact, so far behind that I am going to have to send out form rejection letters. I really dislike doing this, but I believe that writers would rather receive a form rejection than no response at all.
08/19/2002 The second issue of FUHU is full. I'm currently working on the design and layout which should be complete by the end of August. Again, I'm excited by the contents and it seems that all the fiction is theme-related. I would call it alternate world/alternate realities. And, of course, FUHU #2 is as quirky as the first one.
05/15/2002 I received a ton of submissions in March and early April, so many that my average response time has doubled. I hope to get catch up soon, but it's been a daunting task. In other news, you can now buy FUHU through Project Pulp: The .COM of the Small Presses. Also, I'll be at Wiscon this year over the Memorial Day Weekend.
04/06/2002 FUHU has been launched! Yes, it's been a strange and wonderful experience. I've learned much about the process of putting together a magazine, and I hope what I've learned will make the next issue look even better. I've already selected a number of pieces for the second issue (thought it's not close to being filled), and if all goes well, it should be available in August of 2002.
03/12/2002 The first issue of FUHU is currently at the printer, and I'm already starting to fill the second issue, which is phenomenal. I hope to have the first issue out by next week. I can't wait to have it in my hot little hands.
02/14/2002 The first issue of FUHU has been filled. I am quite surprised and pleased at the number of submissions I have received and the quality of them. Sometime in the next month or so, I'll be posting a few teasers from the first issue, which isn't scheduled for publication until May of 2002 but the way things are going, I may have the issue printed before April. Currently, I am looking at submissions for the second issue due out in the Fall of 2002.
01/07/2002 How do I choose pieces for FUHU? Some works I like immediately. They resonate with my own writer's sensibilities. Those are the easy ones. Other works don't 'sing" to me in that very personal way, but I admire the craft, creativity, and time invested in them. At that point, I have to ask myself a few questions:

Does the work have an unusual voice or point of view character?
Does it break the rules of conventional narrative, diverging from the straight, linear story-telling form?
Does it use language in an interesting way?
Does it seamlessly mix different genres: SF, fantasy, horror, mystery, romance, etc.?

If I can answer 'yes' to at least two of the questions, the story is a definite candidate for an acceptance.
01/06/2002 Ironic endings are ubiquitous in genre fiction. Perhaps it's one of the reasons why I don't care for them. In my opinion, waiting until the end of a story to reveal The Big Mystery is cheating. Usually, the author has purposely withheld information from the reader, left out details in order to surprise us. In my opinion, this is a sleight-of-hand trick, and it's not very good story-telling either. The irony that I enjoy is the kind that emerges from the clash between the details of the story and how the characters interpret those details. It takes an expert hand to develop that kind of irony.
01/05/2002 I've been receiving a lot of very short stories lately, some less than 500 words. This isn't a big issue, but writers should keep in mind that such stories are competing with longer works for print space. If I have to choose between a 5000 word story and a 300 word story, I'm going to take the longer one. Unlike other magazine editors, I'm not worried about page count. If the first issue runs longer than I originally expected, so be it.
01/03/2002 The first issue of FUHU is shaping up quite nicely. There's still room though, especially for non-fiction. Click on the current issue button to see the preliminary line up.
12/26/2001 The FUHU editor is in the process of responding to submissions received since December 15th. There seems to be an abundance of poetry, a healthy serving of fiction, but a huge absence of non-fiction. Where's the personal essays, book reviews, and critical analyses? The enquiring (editor's) mind wants to know.
12/24/2001 A technical problem with the online submission form caused some manuscripts to never reach the FUHU inbox. Where did they go? Only the Internet Gods know. The editor recommends that anyone who submitted to FUHU between December 15th and 23rd and did not receive a receipt confirmation should resubmit. I apologize for any inconvenience.
