Scholarship Fund
The F.A.M.E. Scholarship Fund has been established as an endowment fund within the Battle Creek Community Foundation.
Purpose of Fund:
(1). To support a healthy recovery and lifestyle; therefore, the type of grant award will be for diverse needs such as counseling services, clothing, tutorial, or other health and educational related services as determined from time to time by the advisory committee.
(2). To provide assistance to children, up to 18 years of age, of parents or legal guardians who are victims of unsolved homicides in Calhoun County. Grants may be provided to families who reside in the Calhoun County area, regardless of the place of the crime. Highest priority will be given to victims of unsolved murder cases, with secondary priority given to solved cases. Hit and Run cases are to be included if a murderous intent is proven.
(3). To provide assistance to family members who have been adversely effected by an unsolved murder incident.
(4). To provide assistance to individual cold case programs for murders in Calhoun County.
Purposes for Which Grants May Not Be Used:
(1). Reward programs
(2). Endowments
(3). Funeral expenses
(4). Other areas as determined by the advisory committee and as amended to this agreement.
Eligibility Requirements:
Applicants must be children (up to 18 years in age) of parents who are victims of unsolved homicides in the state of Michigan. Scholarships may be provided to eligible families who reside in Calhoun County.
Criteria for Special Assessments:
This project is designed to provide assistance for students who fall under the eligibility requirements above, and who exhibit financial need for specific items that will be of major benefit to their academic performance, physical or mental health, or legal status. Essentially. the assistance should help support the stabilization of the individual. Criteria are as follows:
(1). Must be currently enrolled or completed procedures to re-enroll in school.
(2). Must exhibit financial need for assistance.
(3). Assistance must in some way support the overall academic performance of the individual.
(4). Types of assistance may include, but are not limited to: books, clothing, counseling, nutrition related items, tutoring, health, etc. This fund may also provide a scholarship for the first year of college.
Administration:
This scholarship will be directly administrated by counselors in the Calhoun County schools (K-12). Applications received from the counselors will be reviewed by the F.A.M.E. Advisory Committee. Once approved, checks will be forwarded directly to the vendor (we cannot make checks payable to individuals) from the Battle Creek Community Foundation.
Process for Assessing Need:
School counselor meets with student and completes the application. Application is forwarded to the Battle Creek Community Foundation. Funds will be provided on a first-come, first-need basis. Once the Advisory Committee approves a scholarship, the Battle Creek Community Foundation will make payment to the Grantee and notify the counselor. In the event a request for assistance falls outside guidelines or is on conflict with the charitable purposes of the Battle Creek Community Foundation, the counselor will be notified. Applications may be obtained at the Battle Creek Community Foundation downtown Battle Creek.
