Jermel D. Smith (1975 - 1996)

Jermel was murdered on July 15th, 1996 in Battle Creek, Michigan. He was only 21 years old at the time of his death. Over four years have past since he was killed, and the case still remains unsolved. Bonnie, Jermel's mother and founder of F.A.M.E., did not feel that the investigation of her son's murder was conducted as thoroughly and effectively as it should have been. Bonnie also felt that the prosecutors office did not provide the kind of effort in dealing with this case that is expected of them. This feeling not only led to the organizing of F.A.M.E., but also prompted Bonnie and her husband to take their concerns to the office of the State Attorney General in Michigan. Because of Bonnie's and Michael's dedicated effort in their pursuit of justice for the murder of their son, Jermel's case has been turned over to the FBI.

F.A.M.E. is also involved in discussions with the the Battle Creek Police Department, Battle Creek city officials, and the Calhoun County Prosecutor in an effort to establish a Cold Case Task Force in the area. This type of action is being used in many cities across the country as a means to resolve unsolved homicides.
