And he would say to his queen,"What can I give you to make your world complete ?"
And she would take his hand and say,"Nothing my dear, for I have everything I need to make me happy."
And then one day early in the spring, the king and queen drove out in the carriage with the red wheels and took a walk up in the high hills to a place they had never been before. They were tired when they reached the top of the blue mountains for they had climbed a long way and all the queen wanted when she reached the top was a cup of ice cold water to slake her thirst.
Just where the stream ran purest and coldest was a simple cottage. As the queen looked through the open door, she saw at once the most beautiful thing she had ever seen in her life.
A cradle.
It was a very simple cradle made by a young peasant. It had a wooden canopy and a rocker. But to show his love for the child that lay sleeping in it, the young man had painted on it all the birds he had ever seen. So there were swans and wild geese and snowbirds, curlews, doves, siskins, green linnets, larks, robins and a quail.
"This is the thing I must have," said the queen," to make my world complete."
